When interpreting this famous fictional character, I was familiar with the story but wanted to read it again in full. Translated from the original manuscript by Miguel de Cervantes 1605-1615, the book is long, following Don Quixote through a multitude of adventures and sometimes hilarious mishaps. While our hero is clearly insane, his determination and bravery must be respected. His quest for good against evil is honourable, though often misguided. He bears hardships and calamities with dignity and resolve.
The Don is carried through the tale by his steed, Rocinante, a broken down farm horse, who boldly steps up to the challenges that the mad Knight-errant must face. Despite being thin and worn out, Rocinante, to me, represents all that is good in a horse. Loyalty, courage, patience, endurance, nobility, honesty, kindness, and trust.
My empathy often lies with our brothers and sisters of the animal kingdom and I have a lifetime passion for horses, so it is not surprising that I would see Rocinante as the real hero of the tale. I also keep a small herd of equines, who never wear any metalwork, bits, bridles or shoes. When it came to tackling on this sculpture, I simply couldn't bear to put a bit into Rocinante's mouth. I had become emotionally attached to her by now and am certain that this willing, mythical creature would not need reins to comply with the Don's outlandish demands. A genuine spirit and optimism carries them through.
The original sculpture was modelled in wax, taking me more than 120 hours to create. I aimed to capture the defiant spirit of both horse and rider while adding a hint of desperation. I learned a lot during the process, consulting regularly with Cast, the Dublin foundry who moulded the wax sculpture and transformed it into permanent bronze. The casting was complex due to the hollow sections and multiple pieces. Each cast is unique with a hand made shield and spear and a variety of patinas available, especially in the colour of the cloak.
